MORE ABOUT UDC

Urban Dance Centre (UDC) was founded in 2006 by Juliette Verne and Douglas Blaikie. UDC relocated to new premises in 2009.

Urban Dance Centre also has a thriving youth program with classes held each night during the week and all day on Saturday. Youth students are also able to audition for Urban Youth Project which is performance group that competes and performs in various Hip Hop competitions and events throughout the year. Members of the performance group must attend a minimum of 7 classes per week.

International workshops are held throughout the year with guests from Australia and overseas including Tabitha and Napoleon, Kimberley Wyatt (Pussycat Dolls), Adam Parson, Eddie Morles (Justine Timberlake dancer) and dancers from Americas So You Think You Can Dance top 10.

Open casual classes run Monday to Friday from 6.00-9.00pm and all day Saturday at various levels and students can also audition to be part of Urban Dance Project or Urban Dance Project 2 which are performance groups that compete and perform in various Hip Hop competitions and events throughout the year. These have included; – Flo Rida, Kerri-Anne Show, Industry, Carnival, Looze Control and the Australian Hip Hop Championships.

The fulltime course became accredited in May 2008 and now operates as a Certificate IV in Performing Arts Course (69818). Urban dance Centre is also a nationally Recognised Training Organisation (NTIS 91481). Entry to the course is by audition only. Graduates from UDC have successfully taken contracts with The Mikado, So You Think You Can Dance Top 6 2008, So You Think You Can Dance Tour, Disney’s High School Musical (Australia tour), P&O Cruises and Moulin Rouge.

The studio also offers a scholarship program for dancers 18+ which is designed for serious dancers who wish to enhance their dance education while training and working in a positive environment. Participants have the opportunity to train with Australia’s leading Industry professionals and gain additional work experience as part of UDC’s studio support group.

May 2009 saw the introduction of the Chance to Dance program which initially was in conjunction with South Sydney Youth Services and has since opened up to incorporate more young people. The aim of the program is to access young people who otherwise due to socio-economic factors would not be able to participate in dance classes. Young people on this program mostly come from the Aboriginal community but all cultural backgrounds are welcomed. These young people have had the opportunity to perform alongside students from Urban Dance Centre and also at their own youth centres.

Urban Dance Centre Pty Ltd became a Not For Profit company in December 2008 and a separate entity from J-Foxx Entertainment, although J-Foxx regularly uses UDC dancers in its productions throughout the year.

DANCE STYLES

Ballet
Ballet is one of the world’s most beautiful and demanding art forms, requiring both grace and athleticism. It has a rich history and continues to attract ambitious and dedicated students.

Break Dance
From top rockin and drops, to floor rocks and freezes, this is an athletic, acrobatic style of dance where you will learn the essentials to becoming a B-Boy or B-Girl. The beginner level is fun and easy with no experience needed.

Hip Hop
Originally created on the streets of New York, this constantly evolving style has taken dance to another level, as seen in the movies You Got Served and Step Up. Emphasis is on developing individual style and technique. Hip hop is urban, it’s street, it’s diverse and forever changing!

Jazz/lyrical
A technique based class focusing on balance, turns, kicks and jumps combined with the latest choreography seen on MTV. The lyrical style concentrates on strength, technique, emotion and musicality

Musical Theatre
The emotional content of the piece – humour, love, anger – as well as the story itself, is communicated through dance and song along with technical aspects of Musical Theatre as an integrated whole.

Tap
Tap makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician. It has its own colourful and unique language. Styles include Street Tap and Broadway Tap.

Boys Class
Hip Hop and tap classes for boys and taught by male teachers. These classes allow the boys to focus on technical performance skills in the safety of an all male environment.

URBAN YOUTH PROJECT

Urban Youth Project is a fantastic performance group that has performed at various events and competitions throughout Australia including; Looze Control, Hip Hop Championships in Melbourne, Kerri-Ann Show and most recently they are the winners of the 2009 Sydney Eisteddfod.
